Kohima, July 22: The leadership crisis rocking the Naga People’s Front (NPF) took a twist yesterday with the expulsion of 19 legislators and suspension of another 10 from the party, who were members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
Sources said that swearing-in ceremony of T.R. Zeliang cabinet ministers will be held today at Durbar Hall, Kohima. The Chief Minister and members of his cabinet will be administered oath by Governor PB Acharya at 4PM.
The expelled members, accused of supporting the newly appointed Chief Minister TR Zeliang were Noke Wangnao, MLA; Y. Patton, MLA; C. Kipili Sangtam, MLA; G. Kaito Aye, MLA; Imkong L. Imchen, MLA; Deo Nukhu, MLA; Dr. Benjongliba Aier, MLA; Shetoyi, MLA; Khekaho Assumi, MLA; Naiba Konyak, MLA; Nuklutoshi, MLA; Dr. Longriniken, MLA; Phowang, MLA; Er. Kropol, MLA; C.M. Chang, MLA; S. Pangnyu Phom, MLA; Tokheho Yepthomi, MLA; Merentoshi Jamir, MLA and Imtikumzuk, MLA.
The expulsion order issued by working presidents of NPF Hushkha Yepthomi and Apong Pongener said that 19 members of the party have violated the constitution of the Naga People’s Front by demanding the resignation of the President and former chief minister Dr. Liezietsu without any basis.
While alleging that they also violated the party’s Constitution by defying the ‘Party Whip’ of the House on 21st July 2017.
“The activities of the 19 members are found to be threatening the very fabric of the party. “The president of the party has also thus come to the final conclusion that the activities of the said members as Primary and active members of the Naga People’s Front shall be inimical to the interest of the Party. They are involved in anti-party activities which is singularly aimed at dividing the Party.”
The expulsion order was also given to those members on the same day.
In a separate statement issued by the two working presidents, party members including C. Apok Jamir, MLA; Pukhayi, MLA; Eshak Konyak, , MLA; Tovihoto, , MLA; SI Jamir, MLA; Zhaleo Rio, MLA; Namri Nchang, , MLA; Neiba Kronu, , MLA; Neiliesalie Nicky Kire, MLA and Neiphrezo Keditsu, MLA were suspended from the party on Friday.
“The suspended members will no longer be a primary and active members of the political party of the Naga People’s Front; They shall however continue to be bound by the whip of the Naga People’s Front on the floor of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly as per judicial decisions of the Apex Court,” the statement said.
The expulsion and suspension orders were issued after members of the NPF’s Disciplinary Action Committee held an emergency meeting on Friday.
